Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, paid tribute to martyrs who died in a major campaign in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression, in Yangquan of North China's Shanxi Province on Monday, Xinhua News Agency reported.
At the monument square honoring the martyrs of the Hundred-Regiment Campaign during the war against Japanese aggression, Xi laid a floral basket to pay tribute to the martyrs, and then visited the memorial hall commemorating this major campaign.
During the visit, Xi reviewed the history of the CPC leading both the military and civilians in the courageous fight against Japanese invaders, and learned about local efforts to carry out revolutionary history education and promote the great spirit of resisting aggression.
China on Monday held a ceremony in Beijing to mark the 88th anniversary of the start of the entire nation's resistance against Japanese aggression.
An exhibition themed "For National Liberation and World Peace" was also launched to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
Both the ceremony and the exhibition were held at the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, located near the Lugou Bridge - also known as the Marco Polo Bridge - where Japanese troops attacked Chinese forces on July 7, 1937.
Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, delivered a speech at the event and announced the opening of the exhibition.
When Japanese militarists staged the Lugou Bridge Incident and launched their full-scale invasion of China 88 years ago, the Chinese military and people rose up in resistance, initiating a whole-of-nation war effort that opened the main Eastern battlefield in the global war against fascism, said Cai.
Cai stressed that the CPC fought bravely on the front lines of the resistance and set the direction of the national effort, serving as the pillar of the entire nation throughout the war.
A total of 600 people participated in the ceremony, including the descendants of the veterans of the war, representatives of college and middle school students from the capital, and representatives of officers and soldiers of the troops stationed in Beijing, according to China Central Television (CCTV).
Ninety-eight-year-old Liu Zhirong, who participated in Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and lives near Lugou Bridge, passes by the museum every day. On this anniversary, he told the Global Times that "The crimes committed by Japanese invaders in China are too numerous to be recorded, we shall never forget that."
For the younger generation, especially those who didn't experience that period of history, Liu said they should learn about the deeds of revolutionary predecessors. "They may have watched films and documentaries, but they should more firmly remember history, never forget national humiliation, work steadfastly, be loyal to the people and the revolution, participate in building socialism, and first and foremost, make the people's lives better," said Liu.
Many other Chinese cities also held commemorative activities on the anniversary day.
Shanghai's Sihang Warehouse Battle Memorial, which commemorates Sihang Warehouse defense battle in October 1937, a solemn and moving part of Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), was open on Monday, a day it usually closes.
"I was so excited to hear the memorial is open today … I wanted to bring my child here for education on the history of the revolution. These days, life is too comfortable for this generation - they don't know the hardships of the past, when soldiers shed blood and sacrificed their lives for the country," a woman surnamed Wang, who comes from Shandong Province and visited the memorial on Monday, told the Global Times.
"The bullet holes on the walls of the memorial are reminders that we cannot forget the humiliation, nor the things those invaders did to our country. History shall never be forgotten," 11-year-old Zhong from Fujian Province, who on Monday visited the memorial told the Global Times.
On Monday, a ceremony commemorating the anniversary was held in the morning at the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders. A total of 88 people attended the ceremony, including descendants of Nanjing Massacre survivors. The bell of peace rang out in Nanjing, a tribute and remembrance to the martyrs, and also a hope for peace, local media reported.
Remembering history
The Exhibition Hall of Evidence of Crime Committed by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army unveiled the complete video testimony of the former Unit 731 member Masakuni Kurumizawa for the first time in China ahead of the 88th anniversary of the start of the entire nation's resistance against Japanese aggression, an event marked the start of Japan's full-scale invasion of China and China's whole-nation resistance against the Japanese invaders, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Monday.
Moreover, a full roster of Japan's Unit 8604, obtained from the National Archives of Japan, was unveiled in China for the first time on Monday, and such complete personnel list serves as crucial evidence of the Japanese Imperial Army germ-warfare in South China during its invasion of China, CCTV News reported on Monday.
Publishing those evidence helps to target those die-hard right-wing forces in Japan that obstinately deny the history of Japan's aggression, as well as persistently deny the Nanjing Massacre, Su Wei, a professor at the Party School of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee, told the Global Times.
Su said China's annual commemoration of Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression helps expose the Japanese invader's sins in China and confront right-wing forces in Japan that attempts to twist history.
However, 88 years later, the truth of the historic Lugou Bridge Incident, which marked the start of Japan's full-scale invasion of China, still has not been recorded in Japanese textbooks, according to Xinhua.
"In July 1937, the Japanese and Chinese armies clashed at the Lugou Bridge on the outskirts of Beijing, and the Sino-Japanese War broke out." This is the description of the historic Lugou Bridge Incident in some school textbooks currently published in Japan.
Refuting the lies in those textbooks, Jun Zhengping, an account affiliated with Chinese People's Liberation Army, noted on Weibo on Monday that in front of militarists, the truth is so feeble and fragile that it can be easily fabricated, distorted and exploited. Perhaps under the cold and cruel law of the international jungle, backwardness and weakness are in themselves "original sins" - when there is no pretext, one will arbitrarily create one; when there is no conflict, one will deliberately provoke one.
Drawing lessons from history, we must strive for progress and resolve never to let the tragedy recur, said the account.
Historical responsibility
On Monday, four Japan-China friendship organizations, including the Continuing the Miracle of Fushun Society and the Kanto Japan-China Peace and Friendship Association in Japan, hosted commemoration in Saitama Prefecture in Japan, Iida Yumiko from the Continuing the Miracle of Fushun Society, told the Global Times.
The organization invited Yoichi Jomaru, a former journalist with Asahi Shimbun, to delve into the Nanjing Massacre, and help understand the importance of Sino-Japanese friendship, anti-war efforts and peace.
Eight decades later, certain countries are attempting to undermine the post-war international order through unilateralism, thus putting the world at a critical and dangerous juncture, said Su.
He noted that against this backdrop, it is even more necessary to draw wisdom and strength from the World Anti-Fascist War. To this end, it is necessary to resist unilateralism, and promote multipolarity and globalization. As a defender of the UN, China practices true multilateralism, firmly stands on the right side of history, and demonstrates its responsibility in safeguarding post-war peace and order, said Su.
