"For younger generations, even those born in the 1960s, their understanding of how China rose from poverty and weakness remains limited. This exhibition will help them to see: without the victory against Japanese aggression and the hard-won peace to build the agriculture and industry, there would be no China as we know it today," said a 96-year-old Chinese veteran who visited the themed "For National Liberation and World Peace" exhibition which opened to the public on Tuesday in Beijing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. 

The exhibition was held at the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, which located near the Lugou Bridge - also known as the Marco Polo Bridge - where Japanese troops attacked Chinese forces on July 7, 1937.

According to Luo Cunkang, curator of the museum, since the museum temporarily closed last October, it took over eight months to expand the exhibition space from 6,700 square meters to 12,200 square meters. 

"We spent over a year preparing for this exhibition, began installation in April and completed the entire rearrangement in three months," Luo said.

The exhibition will be on long-term display. Divided into eight sections featuring 1,525 photographs and 3,237 cultural relics, the exhibition showcased how the Communist Party of China first advocated the establishment of the Chinese united front against Japanese aggression and coordinated rear and front battlefields to combat Japanese invaders.  

The display also shows how China actively called for the establishment of a world anti-fascist united front, as well as the numerous crimes committed by Japanese militarism against the Chinese people and the assistance China got from the US and the Soviet Union, among other countries.

The exhibition aims to present the role played in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression to people around the world: China fought not only for its own liberation but also for global peace through enormous sacrifices and contributions, Luo said. 

Veteran Wang Qingkui, 96, who joined the revolutionary movement during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, clearly remembers the moments when he heard the Japanese invaders surrender. 

"I was 15 when the war ended in 1945. I had already joined the CPC and was studying at a training school for cadres in the Sixth Subdistrict of the Taihang region, preparing for the anticipated victory. We were watching a Russian play performed by the military's cultural troupe when the performance was suddenly interrupted with the broadcast announcing Japan's unconditional surrender. Thousands of us burst into cheers. No one could sleep. We were all wondering what would come next, waiting for instructions from the Party," Wang told the Global Times.

Wang said the exhibition could help younger generations to have a deeper understanding of how China developed. 

Among the more than 500 items on display, there are 115 first-class artifacts and over 400 new cultural relics and archives. "We have borrowed items from more than 50 museums and private collectors nationwide, including the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution, the National Museum, Central Gifts and Artifacts Center, Museum Cluster Jianchuan, and Chongqing Hongyan Revolution History Museum," deputy museum curator Li Zhidong said.

Several relics and archives are making their debut, including detailed files on Zhao Yiman from her capture to heroic sacrifice, a photo of the Japanese army's brutal execution of Yang Jingyu, revolutionary martyr certificates for Shen Zhongming, an underground CPC member who died in the Lugou Bridge Incident, and the Japanese edition of "On Protracted War."

"I've been to the museum before, but back then the displays were limited. Now, the exhibition is so large I couldn't even take it all in," said Cao Dianlin, a 94-year-old veteran, who joined the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army at the age of 14 and then fought in the War of Liberation. 

"When the war ended, I was just a low-ranking soldier. I didn't have much education and just knew we had won, and I was overjoyed. I hope the Chinese young people will keep moving forward, generation after generation. Without those who came before us, there wouldn't be the good life we have today. So many sacrificed their lives for our country,"Cao said.

Besides numerous display items, the exhibition vividly recreates classic historical scenes, with technologies such as holographic imaging, transparent display screens, and AI interaction, such as Battle of Pingxingguan, Hundred-Regiment Campaign, and the 7th National Congress of the CPC which adopted Mao Zedong Thought as the Party's guiding ideology in Yan'an in 1945.

Zhang Jinhan, a university student from Capital University of Economics and Business, is one of over 700 volunteers from universities including Capital Normal University and the Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology who are supporting the special exhibition.

"I've had a deep sense of respect for the history of the War of Resistance since I was a child. Being able to meet veterans who actually fought in the war is an incredibly rare and valuable experience," she said.

Zhang said that, as a volunteer, she hopes to have a deeper understanding of the hardships and sacrifices the Chinese people endured in that fight with precious photos, books and personal belongings of those who came before us. 

"I hope to share these heroic stories of people who gave their lives for the country with the visitors, especially children and young students. I believe these stories will truly inspire us all," she added, which just echoed the message displayed on the red panel at the entrance of the exhibition "Remember history, honor the martyrs, cherish peace and create the future."
